Quarterly U.S. Department of Education Newsletter for the Military Community
January 2014

=============
Spotlight
A new section is being added to Touching Base.
The newsletter shall highlight the efforts of individuals, schools, educators, school districts, and/or states that provide support to our military families in a special way and/or those who have addressed military families concerns in an exemplary way.
Highlighted this month is Eisenhower Elementary in
Fort Leavenworth, Kansas for their SchoolTube video Heroes at Home: Our School Community.
In the video, school students noted the importance
of mentorship and support for each other as they navigate the frequent moves, deployments and separations brought on by more than a decade of war.  Additionally, this video clearly portrays how the military has shouldered the burden of multiple deployments and separations for years now, and how it affects the family members, specifically their school aged children, just as it affects the service members. The school leadership and the students at Eisenhower Elementary for being a model of support for all military connected students and their families, through the use of technology are to be applauded. The video is made available to the entire school community and is a means to inspire all who view it. To view the school tube video, visit http://bit.ly/1dpWp3g
During this holiday season, as we gather with our loved ones, I’d ask every American
to remember what our military families and service members

often experience during this time of year. Let us all remember the sacrifices they make to proudly serve all of us.

- First Lady Michelle Obama,

the White House,    Dec. 4, 2013
